Bullying- everyone knows about it, but a lot of people don’t realize why it’s serious. Bullying can be defined as unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involve a real or perceived power imbalance. About 30% of teens in the U.S have been involved in bullying. People should care about bullying because teens are killing themselves because of it.
Some people may not understand why bullying is an important issue. A reason why people might not think it’s important is because some people think it’s funny. For example, if someone falls a lot of people might laugh but you never know how the victim might feel. Another reason kids bully is that they may fall into a trap by thinking that bullying is just “the cool thing to do,” especially in front of their friends. Sometimes bullies are those kids who are good students, athletes, or the kids who seem to have everything going for them. Another reason is he (or she) might have a deep troubling need of his own and is picked on or feels that he does not have a very successful life. Bullies may be experiencing trouble at home, be underachievers in school, and for whatever reason they feel they have to make themselves better by picking on someone else.
Bullying has a major impact in the lives of many teens. One example on how this issue affects the lives of teens is it sometimes causes depression. Depression is an illness that is not totally understood, and may have a variety of causes, but it is clear that it can have a relationship to bullying. Both bullies and their victims are more likely to suffer from depression than youth who are not involved in bullying. Another way bullying affects teens is physical illness. A lot of times when someone is bullying another person the bully physically hurts the victim and that might leave some physical illnesses. The most common way bullying affects teens is it possibly might lead to suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it. The main reason why that is because of bullying.
There are many ways to stop bullying; one way is Stand up for others. If you stand up for someone that is being bullied you can stop them from doing something really horrible. Another was is think of what if that were you getting bullied. Would you want that to happen to you? If the answer is no then stop making that person’s life miserable. Also, keep in mind that everyone is different, not better or worse, just different.
Why should we end bullying? Bulling has been an exceeding issue over the years, it is about time to make it stop. Bulling affects everyone not just the victims of bulling but, the bully’s and everyone surrounding them. The numbers of kids that are starting to become victims as well as bullies are increasing. A lot of people don’t realize that a lot of teens are killing themselves because of it.
